Suspected immunological deficiency

Assessment for non-HIV immunodeficiency with recurrent infections, chronic sinusitis/bronchiectasis, or end-organ disease.

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Three or more proven bacterial infections within one year

Chronic sinusitis and/or bronchiectasis where no other cause has been elicited

Assessment for non-HIV immunodeficiency where there is end-organ disease

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Severe or life-threatening infection — refer to Emergency Department

Suspected severe primary immunodeficiency with rapidly progressive end-organ disease — contact Allergy/Immunology registrar on 9076 2000

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Recurrent infections meeting criteria with completed primary-care work-up

Family history of immunodeficiency under investigation

Usually managed in primary care

Document frequency and type of infections and infective organisms where possible.
Investigate and document sinusitis/bronchiectasis (imaging, sputum culture).
Record family history of immunodeficiency.
Provide baseline immunoglobulins, FBE and HIV serology where appropriate.
