Skin lesions and other skin cancers — referral criteria for General surgery services.

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Clinically suspected or confirmed skin lesions and other skin cancers with initial primary-care work-up completed

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Complex non-melanoma skin malignancies and any of the following — lymphadenopathy

Complex non-melanoma skin malignancies and any of the following — neurological involvement

Complex non-melanoma skin malignancies and any of the following — poorly differentiated or infiltrative tumour identified on biopsy

Complex non-melanoma skin malignancies and any of the following — rapidly enlarging

Complex non-melanoma skin malignancies and any of the following — ulceration and bleeding

Other subcutaneous and deep tissue malignancies e.g. Merkel cell carcinoma, sarcoma

Skin lesions with any of the following — causing functional problems (e.g. obstruction of vision)

Skin lesions with any of the following — causing significant disfigurement

Skin lesions with any of the following — diagnosis in doubt, or needs confirmation

Skin lesions with any of the following — diameter greater than or equal to 5 centimetres in size

Skin lesions with any of the following — fixed to deep tissues

Skin lesions with any of the following — lesions are prone to recurrent infection

Skin lesions with any of the following — rapid growth over short period of time

Skin lesions with any of the following — recurring after a previous excision

Skin lesions with any of the following — significant persistent pain that is not solely pressure related

Usually managed in primary care

Benign skin lesions not causing functional problems (e.g. causing obstruction to vision), or significant disfigurement and not related to immunosuppression.

Recommendation

Referral criteria not met

Patient does not meet Statewide Referral Criteria. Reassess if condition changes.
