Achilles tendon pathology

Chronic Achilles tendinopathy (excluding acute rupture which is ED).

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Standard history and examination, X-ray (AP & lateral ankle/foot, weight-bearing)

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Acute traumatic Achilles tendon rupture — refer to ED

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Persistent symptoms despite physiotherapy and heel cups/raise

Usually managed in primary care
