Bayside Referral Assist

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Clinically suspected or confirmed dysphagia - ent with initial primary-care work-up completed

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Sudden onset of inability to swallow

Inability to swallow

Swallowing problems accompanied by difficulty in breathing or stridor

Difficulty in swallowing caused by a foreign body or solid food

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Oropharyngeal or throat dysphagia with either — hoarseness

Oropharyngeal or throat dysphagia with either — progressive weight loss

Oropharyngeal or throat dysphagia with either — history of smoking

Oropharyngeal or throat dysphagia with either — excessive alcohol intake

Progressively worsening oropharyngeal or throat dysphagia

Inability to swallow with drooling or pooling of saliva
