Diabetic eye disease — referral criteria for Ophthalmology services.

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Clinically suspected or confirmed diabetic eye disease with initial primary-care work-up completed

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)

Assessment of severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy threatening vision

Vitreous haemorrhage in a person with diabetes

Usually managed in primary care
