Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Clinically suspected or confirmed chalazions in children with initial primary-care work-up completed

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Orbital or periorbital cellulitis

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Chalazion (eyelid cyst) that are chronic (persistent for more than 3 months) or recurrent, and non-responsive to treatment (i.e. hot compresses, lid hygiene or topical antibiotics)

Usually managed in primary care

Chalazion that have not been present for more than 3 months or have not been treated (i.e. hot compresses, lid hygiene or topical antibiotics)
