Food allergy

Non-anaphylactic food allergy assessment. Blood (specific IgE) or skin testing is performed at The Alfred.

Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Adult patient (18+) with suspected non-anaphylactic food allergy

Diagnostic uncertainty requiring specific IgE or skin testing

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Acute anaphylaxis to a food — refer to Emergency Department

Recent food-induced anaphylaxis without an established management plan — contact Allergy registrar on 9076 2000

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Reproducible food-related symptoms with a plausible causative food identified on history

Mild or intermittent food-related symptoms without anaphylaxis

Usually managed in primary care

Document careful history of foods (and drugs) ingested before each episode and the time interval to reaction.
Document anaphylaxis, severity of symptoms and interval between exposure and reaction.
Children under 18 are not seen at Alfred Health.
