Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Adult patient (18+) with prior anaphylaxis requiring specialist assessment

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Acute anaphylaxis — refer to Emergency Department

Recent anaphylaxis — contact Allergy registrar on 9076 2000 for urgent assessment

Anaphylaxis where no management plan exists

Anaphylaxis to an avoidable identified agent

Need to formulate an anaphylaxis management plan and EpiPen education

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Triggering allergen uncertain or difficult to avoid (appointments expedited)

Usually managed in primary care

Identify causative agent from history if possible.
Advise whether the patient currently has an EpiPen / adrenaline autoinjector.
Make safe if possible: avoid the likely causative agent.
Provide an Anaphylaxis Action Plan and EpiPen pending specialist review.
