Eligibility

At least one must be met for the patient to be eligible for referral.

Adult patient (18+) who has had anaphylaxis and requires an adrenaline autoinjector

Patient requires ongoing PBS-authorised adrenaline autoinjector supply

Patient and/or carer needs an action plan and training on autoinjector use

Red flags

Indicate urgent (Category 1) referral or emergency assessment.

Acute anaphylaxis — refer to Emergency Department

Anaphylaxis without an autoinjector — GP may phone the Allergist on call to approve supply, or it can be prescribed by the treating emergency physician

Routine referral criteria

Determine Category 2 or 3 urgency.

Stable patient with existing autoinjector needing review or renewal of PBS authority

Usually managed in primary care

Confirm whether the patient already has an adrenaline autoinjector and document the brand and expiry.
Provide an interim ASCIA Anaphylaxis Action Plan and demonstrate device technique.
Refer early — ongoing PBS supply requires specialist authorisation.
